- Core respiratory physiology and why it matters during anaesthesia
- Understanding the building blocks of ventilation modes (trigger, limit, cycle, baseline)
- Volume- and pressure-controlled ventilation, PSV, SIMV: what they mean in daily practice
- Anaesthesia ventilators vs ICU machines: what they can and can’t do
- Monitoring ventilation (capnography, spirometry, loops) and how to use the data
- Troubleshooting common challenges and optimising patient safety through case examples
Learning Outcomes
By the end of session 1, participants will be able to:
- Explain the physiological basis and principles of mechanical ventilation in anaesthetised animals.
- Compare ventilation modes and select the most appropriate strategy for clinical cases.
- Recognise limitations of anaesthesia ventilators and adapt practice accordingly.
- Use monitoring and troubleshooting to improve ventilation safety.

The second lecture will delve into the complications that can arise during anesthesia and will include real-life case studies to illustrate these challenges and their management.
Content Overview
- From preparation to protocols: assessing risk (anamnesis, ASA status, lab tests) and building safer anaesthetic plans
- Equipment preparation, anaesthetic machines, and the role of pre-emptive analgesia
- Top six complications: hypoxaemia, hypotension, arrhythmias, hypoventilation, hypothermia, poor recovery
- Principles of monitoring for early recognition and intervention
- Interactive case discussions linking preparation, monitoring, complications, and outcomes
Learning Outcomes
By the end of Day 2, participants will be able to:
- Identify risk factors and integrate them into anaesthetic planning for dogs and cats.
- Recognise, interpret, and manage the most frequent anaesthetic complications.
- Apply monitoring tools effectively to anticipate and address complications.
- Use case-based learning to refine clinical decision-making and patient safety.
About Mathieu Raillard:
Mathieu graduated from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 2010. After completing a rotating internship at the École Nationale Vétérinaire de Maisons-Alfort, France, followed by a specialty internship in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia at ONIRIS Nantes, France, Mathieu completed an ECVAA residency at the University of Bristol, UK. He also undertook a “Diplôme d’Université” in artificial ventilation at the University of Angers, France. He worked as a clinician at the University of Bern, Switzerland, as a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia at the University of Sydney, and as an Anesthesia advisor for one of Europe’s largest corporates. He served as an Associate Editor of the journal Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia between 2018 and 2024.
Mathieu recently completed his PhD on the dynamic compliance of the respiratory system in anesthetised dogs at Murdoch University. He is now an Associate Professor in Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia and the current Senior Vice President of the Association of Veterinary Anesthetists. Mathieu’s main clinical and research interest is in the field of respiratory mechanics and mechanical ventilation across species.
